Psalm 120
Prayer for Deliverance from the Treacherous
A Song of Ascents
<LIST type="decimal">
-

- In my trouble I cried to the LORD,
And He answered me.

- Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips,
From a deceitful tongue.

- What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you,
You deceitful tongue?

- Sharp arrows of the warrior,
With the burning coals of the broom tree.

- Woe is me, for I sojourn in Meshech,
For I dwell among the tents of Kedar!

- Too long has my soul had its dwelling
With those who hate peace.

- I am for peace, but when I speak,
They are for war.

The last three verses represent not only the hard life of bondage, but our current lives. The Hebrew children wanted either war or to live with malevolent overseers. They wanted to live in peace. Most of us can identify with having our dwellings amongst those who hate peace. Most of us can also identify with being for peace and being attacked for it.
These fifteen psalms are also called the Pilgrim Psalms and tradition has it that they were sung and chanted and discussed by those traveling to the Pilgrim Feasts of Israel. Imagine that you were living in a village some distance from Jerusalem, maybe 400 years before Jesus walked as a human on this earth. Some of your friends and neighbors and you and your family are making the trek, going "up to Jerusalem" for the Feast of the Lord. Not everyone in the village and not everyone from each family has come along. You're not dwelling on who's missing or why, just focusing on where you're going.
Part of the tradition is that the pilgrimage is a remembrance of the Exodus. As we explore these psalms, you'll experience aspects of not only the historic trip from Egypt to the land of promise, but I hope that elements of A Pilgrim's Progress will also be evident. And of course we'll find things that are right out of our current life experiences and exposures.
It's time to start our trip, to turn our faces and our feet toward the City of God, toward the House of the Lord.
The psalms are taken from the New American Standard Version on
www.biblegateway.com with all of their verse divisions and titles.
Read them and enjoy the journey!
ZionFire will be part of the ministry at An Evening of Prayer and Worship, Sept 28, 2012, Kansas City at Colonial Presbyterian church.
This gathering is an opportunity to pray and repent 40 days before the presidential election.

We'll be providing our traveling Ark of the Covenant as an altar focus for the event.

Jerusalem Gold Original has been added to the theme changer as a viewing option for ZionFireFriends. This was the design in use prior to the website update that integrated this forum with our ZionFire site. So some of you may recognize that old friend.
In recently helping a friend update a little netbook, I realized that users with limited resolutions and mobile users likely had some issues with the width of our default theme.
Jerusalem Gold Original is completely fluid so that should be helpful to those of you with those issues.
I am also considering adding a mobile-friendly theme at some point.
Ingredients.
450g currants
180g raisins
180g sultanas
75g finely chopped mixed peel
¼ cup brandy
225g butter, softened
225g soft brown sugar
4 eggs, at room temperature
225g plain flour
¼ tsp salt
½ tsp grated nutmeg
½ tsp mixed spice
75g chopped, blanched almonds
1 tbsp treacle
Finely grated zest of 1 orange
35g whole blanched almonds, to decorate.
Method.
1. The day before baking, place dried fruit, mixed peel and brandy in large bowl. Mix well and cover with plastic wrap. Leave for 24 hours, stirring occasionally. Line a 20cm round cake tin or 18cm square tin with brown paper and a lining of nonstick baking paper.
2. Next day, heat oven to 140°C (120°C fan bake). Place butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well between each addition.
3. Sift flour, salt and spices together and gently fold into beaten mixture. Fold in brandy-soaked fruit, chopped almonds, treacle and orange zest. Spoon the mixture into prepared cake tin, spreading it evenly and smoothing the surface with the back of a spoon.
4. Decorate surface with whole almonds. Bake for 3 to 3½ hours or until an inserted skewer comes out clean. If necessary, cover loosely with foil part-way through cooking to prevent over-browning. Cool in cake tin for 1 hour, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.
Tips.
Traditional Christmas fruit cakes are best made well in advance at the end of october or beginning of November so the flavours can mature.
"Feed" the cake with brandy about once a week by making holes all over the cake with a skewer, then spooning over brandy to soak through the holes and permeate the cake with flavour.
To store, wrap the cake in a double layer of greaseproof paper, then wrap it again in foil or place in an airtight cake tin. Dont wrap in plastic wrap or the cake will sweat and deteriorate.
This can be made now and stored, it won't go off if kept properly.. IMHO it tends to taste a little better at christmas if made well ahead of time as long as you remember to add a little brandy to it every week or so.. very useful if you have a few to make for a bigger family..
